A new biotechnical tool, the CRISPR gene scissors, is revolutionising genetic engineering. And it is fuelling hopes that long-awaited gene therapies will finally be applied.

Even the cure for cancer or AIDS seems within reach. At the same time, however, the manipulation of embryos is possible and thus the “designer baby”. Genetic scissors can be used to intervene in the genetic material of microorganisms, plants, animals or humans to the letter.
