Wildlife rescuers in the urban jungle
Christian Erdmann’s motto is unusual: “Deer off the sofa.” More and more wild animals are making their home in the city of Hamburg, eagle owls in Ohlsdorf, herons and seagulls at the harbour, foxes in front gardens or raccoons in the shopping centre.
However, the proximity to humans poses many dangers for wild animals. Barbed wires, cars, wind turbines, construction work, countless of them so daily in distress in the big city.
More than 4,000 injured wild animals are cared for in Hamburg every year. Many of them come to Christian Erdmann at the Wild Animal Station Hamburg. He looks after them until they can be released back into the wild.
